Dining Table Buying Guide for Bangalore Homes: Size, Wood, and Configuration

Dining Table Buying Guide for Bangalore Homes

A dining table has one job: to be the right size for your space while being robust enough to handle daily use. In Bangalore, where most apartments feature dining areas of 100–180 sqft, choosing the wrong size is a common and expensive mistake. This guide covers everything you need to know.

Step 1: Choose the Right Table Size for Your Apartment

For a standard Bangalore 2BHK dining area (approx. 10×10ft):

  • A 4-seater table at 120×75cm is the most practical choice, leaving 90cm of chair-pull clearance on all sides
  • A 6-seater at 150×85cm can fit, but circulation becomes tight - consider going extendable

For a 3BHK with a separate dining room (12×12ft or larger):

  • A 6-seater fixed table at 160–180cm is ideal
  • An 8-seater at 200–220cm becomes viable

The critical clearance rule: You need at least 90cm between the table edge and any wall or cabinet, measured when chairs are pulled out. Less than this and guests will be knocking elbows with the wall every time they stand up.

Step 2: Fixed vs Extendable Dining Tables

Fixed Tables are structurally simpler, more robust, and cheaper. If you entertain rarely and always have a consistent number of diners, a fixed table is the better choice. Solid wood fixed tables also tend to be heavier and more stable.

Extendable Tables are ideal for Bangalore apartments where space is at a premium daily but you need capacity for occasional guests or family events. A 120cm table that extends to 160cm (butterfly or drop-leaf mechanism) is the most practical size for a 2BHK.

What to check in an extendable mechanism:

  • Look for a solid wood butterfly fold - it should operate tool-free in under 20 seconds
  • Avoid plastic mechanisms - they crack within 2–3 years
  • Check that the extension leaf is the same material and finish as the main table

Step 3: Solid Wood vs. Other Materials

Solid Teak The gold standard for dining tables in Bangalore. Teak is naturally oil-rich, which makes it highly resistant to humidity shifts and spilled liquids. A properly finished teak dining table is easy to wipe clean, doesn't stain easily, and will last 30+ years.

Solid Oak Harder than teak and takes wood stain in a wider range of shades. Excellent for achieving lighter finishes (natural blonde or washed grey). Slightly more susceptible to humidity than teak but very durable overall.

Solid Sheesham The most affordable solid wood option. Great grain pattern, very dense, and handles humidity well. A practical choice if you want the longevity of solid wood at a lower price point.

MDF / Particle Board with Veneer Common in budget furniture chains. The core material absorbs humidity, causing edges to swell and veneer to peel within 3–5 years - especially in Bangalore's wet season. Not recommended for a piece used every day.

Step 4: Chair Configuration and Comfort

  • 4 chairs at a rectangular table: 2 on each long side - standard
  • 6 chairs: 2 on each long side + 1 at each end
  • Bench seating on one side: Creates a relaxed, casual feel and maximises seating without adding bulk

Chair height: Dining chairs should ideally seat you with your elbows at table height. Standard table height is 75cm; standard chair height is 45cm seat height - a 30cm differential is the target.
